SOUTH POINT — Better late than never.

The South Point Pointers scored two runs late in the game and beat the Portsmouth Trojans 6-4 on Tuesday in the Division III sectional tournament.

South Point (8-5) plays at 5 p.m. Friday at Wheelersburg in the sectional finals.

Portsmouth built a 3-0 lead after two innings before the Pointers got two runs in the third inning.

Blake Meadows singled and scored when Kyle Winkler tripled. Kyle Dickess grounded out as Winkler came home.

South Point took the lead with two runs in the fourth inning.

With two outs, Stephen McClure walked, Meadows was safe on an error and Winkler walked to load the bases. Dickess then singled to drive in the two runs.

Portsmouth tied the game with a run in the fifth inning, but the Pointers got the winning runs in the sixth.

McClure started the inning with a double. Pinch-runner Adam Muncy went to third base on a passed ball and scored when Meadows reached on an error. Winkler and Dickess singled but Meadows was thrown out at home.

With runners at second and third, Josh Esque walked to load the bases and Jordan Fletcher put down a perfect squeeze bunt to give the Pointers an insurance run.

Portsmouth got a runner on in the seventh with two outs, but he strayed too far from first base and McClure — the Pointers’ catcher — picked him off to end the game.

Jacob Seagraves went the distance to get the win. He gave up six hits, struck out nine and walked three.

Dickess went 2-4 with two runs batted in and Winkler was 2-2.

On Monday, the Pointers beat the Coal Grove Hornets 8-4 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Steven Adkins had the key blow with a three-run triple in the fifth inning.

Dickess got the complete game win with a six-hitter. He struck out 11 and walked two.
