SOUTH POINT — It wasn’t how many hits, but when they would hit.

Timely hitting was the key as the South Point Lady Pointers beat the Portsmouth West Lady Senators 8-2 on Friday in the Division III sectional finals.

West outhit the Lady Pointers 9-to-8 but they were not as productive with their offense.

“We knew coming in that if we got runners on we had to hit the ball at the right time in the right places to score runs because we knew Portsmouth West usually does not give up a lot of runs,” said Lady Pointers coach Steve Baise.

West took a 1-0 led in the top of the first inning but the Lady Pointers came back with four runs in the second inning.

Hannah Huron tripled to start the inning and scored on a wild pitch.

Tausha Collins and Ashlee Kleinman walked and Ashley Goodall was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ashley Smith walked to force home pinch-runner Katelynn Leonard and Ericka Leighty bunted for a hit as pinch-runner Ajay Adkins came home.

Amy Lien had a two-run single to cap the rally.

Four more runs scored in the third inning and it was 8-1.

Collins walked and Goodall and Emily Button singled to load the bases. Leighty and Courtney Koukos followed with two-run singles.

South Point (12-5) will play Belpre at 5 p.m. on Monday in the district semifinals at McDermott Northwest.

“We have come close to winning the sectional the last three years. It felt great to finally move onto the districts,” said Baise.

Lien was 2-3 and Leighty 2-4 to place the South Point offense. Huron struck out six and walked one to get the win.
