SOUTH POINT — Coach Jay Lucas might have said something that had the sound an old cliché, but it was the sweet sound of victory to the Coal Grove Hornets.

Lucas had an obvious but true thought about the Hornets winning their first Ohio Valley Conference track meet in 12 years on Friday.

“I know it might sound like an old cliché that coaches use a lot, but this really was a total team effort,” said Lucas as the Hornets won their first track title since 1997.

“The kids went out and performed. We’ve talked about (winning the title) every day. They’ve really worked hard. I’m really proud of them.”

Coal Grove had 172 points to finish ahead of Fairland with 161 points. River Valley had 89 points, South Point 51, Chesapeake 25 and Rock Hill 24.

The Hornets Daniel “Oakie” Haynes was a key factor in the win as he took meet high point honors with 32.5. Haynes won the 100- and 200-meter dashes along with the long jump. He also placed fifth in the pole vault.

Another key contributor was freshman distance runner Jacob Pauley who was first in the 800- and 1600-meter runs and second in the 3200.

“We asked a lot of Pauley and Oakie, but they really performed well,” said Lucas.

Coal Grove’s distance runners — all freshmen and sophomores — were big contributors. Lucas praised high school and junior high coaches Rick Barrett, Dave Lucas, Layne Wireman, Nick Miller and Rick Roach for their work.

“The coaches were a big part of this. Coach Barrett did a good job with the distance runners and coach Wireman has done a good job getting our kids ready at the junior high level,” said Lucas.

Coal Grove also got first place finishes from Aaron Dickess in the discus, Frank Delawder in the shot put, and the 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams.

Dion Cunningham, Evan Ferguson, Jake Brown and Dickess comprised the 4×200 team while the 4×100 was made up of Boo Woods, Mike Nance, Dickess and Brown.

Fairland stayed close with their depth and first place finishes from Aaron Ward in both hurdles, Matt Bloomfield in the 400, Kyle Kincaid in the pole vault, Joe Stewart in the 3200 run, and the 4×800 relay team of Jevon Hayes, Eddie Adkins, Kyle Taubenheim and Stewart.
