McDERMOTT — Belpre’s hits were in the right place at the right time.

Although Belpre had only five hits, the Lady Eagles got them at the right time as they managed to beat the South Point Lady Pointers 3-1 on Monday in the Division III district semifinals.

“It was a great game to watch. I really felt that both teams were equally matched in talent,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Steve Baise who is retiring as the softball coach. “Belpre just got the hits to fall exactly at the time they needed.

“I was really proud of how the girls played. It’s been a great season and it was great to make it back to the districts.”

Belpre broke on top with a run in the bottom of the first inning with two outs.

Regina Leftwich reached second base on a misplayed fly ball. Taylor Mason singled to left field between shortstop and third base to drive in Leftwich.

South Point threatened in the second when Huron double to right and got to third base when Tausha Collins grounded out. But Huron was thrown out at home trying to score on a ground ball off the bat of Katelynn Leonard.

Belpre pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning.

Morgan Mercer beat out a roller down the third base line that the umpires ruled a fair ball. Mercer raced to second base on the play.

Amaris Skinner followed with a run-scoring double and she eventually scored on a sacrifice fly.

South Point got its run and had an opportunity to score more.

Emily Button opened the inning with a base hit to center. An out later, Ericka Leighty hit a hard grounder the shortstop was unable to field and runners were at first and second.

Courtney Koukos doubled to left as Button scored and the Lady Pointers had runners at second and third. But a strike out and a great catch by Belpre’s right-fielder Brittany McNabb off the bat of Huron ended the threat.

Huron suffered the loss despite giving up just five hits.

South Point had six hits with Collins going 2-3. Mercer was 3-3 for Belpre.

The Lady Pointers were without senior catcher Ashlee Kleiman who missed the game due to an illness.
