‘Lucky’ Vikings roll by Manchester to district finals

LUCASVILLE — Who says 13 is an unlucky number.

The Symmes Valley Vikings found it lucky as they scored 13 runs in the first inning and rolled past the Manchester Greyhounds 13-2 on Wednesday in the Division IV district semifinals.

The Vikings ripped 11 hits including four extra base hits.

“We got off the bus hitting,” said Vikings’ coach Chad Renfroe.

“We kid of had a let down after the first inning. We tried to keep them up, but it’s tough.”

With one out, the Vikings scored 13 runs in a row before the Greyhounds recorded a second out.

Powell and Cody Bland and Jeremy Hatfield all singled for a run. Luke Taylor then crushed a 400-foot home run to make it 4-0.

Ethan Wilson walked, Dustin Wilson singled and Cody Myers walked to load the bases. Tyler Easthom was safe on an error for a run, Robbie Powell got hit by a pitch to force in a run and Bland walked to drive in a run.

Hatfield smacked a three-run double. Taylor walked and Ethan Wilson had a two-run triple. Dustin Wilson capped the rally with an RBI single.

Powell got the win as he struck out five, gave up eight hits, did not walk a batter and both runs were earned.

Dustin Wilson was 3-3, Bland 2-2 and Hatfield 2-3 to pace the offense.

Symmes Valley (16-2) will play Trimble at 5 p.m. on Friday in the district finals.
