Hornets’ Haynes earns berth in state meet

LANCASTER — Daniel “Oakie” Haynes will make it a two-for-one trip.
The Coal Grove Hornets junior sprinter qualified for the Ohio High School Athletic Association state track and field meet in two events at Friday’s Division III regional meet.
Haynes was third in the 200-meter dash at 22.51 seconds and fourth in the 100-meter dash with an 11.29 time. He qualifed for the final on Wednesday with a 22.98 in the 200 and 11.53 in the 100.
The top four finishers in each event qualify for the state meet on Friday and Saturday at Jesse Owens’ Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University.
Coal Grove’s Jacob Pauley was 12th in the 1600 meter run with a 4:43.65 time. Teammate Aaron Conley also placed 12th in the pole vault as he cleared 10-feet.
Chesapeake’s Kenny France was 10th in the shot put at 44-1.75.
Coal Grove’s Cody Damron was 15th in the high jump.
On Wednesday’s first day of the meet, Coal Grove junior Aaron Dickess was eighth in the discus with a toss of 136-3.
Several athletes reached the finals but did not place.
Chesapeake’s Peter Hintz qualified for the long jump finals only to finish ninth at 19-2.75.
In the girls’ meet, Coal Grove’s Chelsea Delong made the shot put finals and ended in ninth place with a heave of 33-0.75.
Delong also threw in the discus along with Chesapeake’s Barbie Plybon.
