SOUTH POINT — They allegedly tried to elude the long arm of the law by getting a motel room; they were busted anyway.

A South Point couple were arrested on drug charges Friday by the Lawrence County Drug and Major Crimes Task Force.

Jamie L. Mayhone, 28 of 119 Ashland Drive, South Point, was charged with complicity to trafficking in crack cocaine. Joseph Stewart, 28, of the same address, was charged with trafficking in crack cocaine. They were both taken to the Lawrence County Jail.

“We had gotten a lot of complaints about traffic there on Ashland Drive,” DTF Investigator Dave Marcum said. “We initiated an investigation probably two months ago.”

Marcum said the couple were arrested at the Grandview Inn. One of the two allegedly told authorities they suspected they were under police surveillance for their activities and was staying at the motel to avoid being arrested.

Four children under the age of 10 were at the motel when Mayhone and Stewart were arrested. Children’s Services participated in the drug bust and assumed care of the children.

Marcum said he anticipates more charges being levied against the two when their cases are presented to an upcoming session of the grand jury.
