ROME TOWNSHIP — The third time was the charm, but then so was the first and second. That’s how many times Dakota Barnett, 17, took the top prize in the chicken competition.

Joining Barnett in the winner’s circle was Jonathan Keathley of Scottown, who took the reserve champion title.

Barnett of Kitts Hill and a junior at Rock Hill High School entered a Cornish Rock chicken to get the Grand Champion trophy. On top of Monday night’s win and her other grand champion trophies, Barnett has also taken reserve champion twice in the eight years she has been involved with 4-H. She is a member of the Country Rebels

“I think I am just lucky,” she said, adding she was excited when the judge called out her name.

She chose to stay with the Cornish Rock breed because of her past success.

“I took them before and did really good,” Barnett said. “I like going to the fair and meeting new people.”
