Ohio SL All-Star girls advance to semifinal round

SOUTH BEND — A quick start meant an early finish.

The Ohio Senior League Girls All-Stars took a big lead early and coasted to a 12-2 win in just six innings over Iowa on Tuesday and earned a berth in the Central Region semifinals.

“Our girls jumped out to a five-run lead and it was over from there. (Karlie) Collins pitched a good game and we played good defense behind her,” said Ohio coach Ron Estep.

Ohio won the Pool B title with a 3-0 record. After an off day on Wednesday, Ohio will play Michigan at 10 a.m. on Thursday in the Central regional semifinal.

“These girls have worked well together and they’ve worked hard,” said Estep.

The Indiana state champion will play the host team from South Bend in the second semifinal game.

Collins went five innings, struck out four, walked three and gave up two runs and four hits. Erica Corn finished up.

Ohio jumped on Iowa with five runs in the top of the first inning.

Bekkah Potter, Nikki Nance and Collins all singled for two runs. Nikki Elswick and Chelsea Wall singled to load the bases and Andi Kratzenberg reached on an error as two runs scored. Brooke Skinner was safe on an error to score the final run of the inning.

Potter and Nance singled to start the second inning, moved up on a passed ball and Saige Fields grounded out as both runners came home.

Iowa got two runs in the bottom of the inning only to have Ohio answer with a run in the third.

Jessie Morris singled, took second on an overthrow from the outfield, stole third and scored on a passed ball.

In the fifth, Skinner and Morris singled with two outs, Potter was safe on an error to load the bases and Nance had a two-run single.

The final two runs crossed the plate in the sixth.
