Sister Marjorie Ford, 90, of Ironton, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009 from the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
She was born May 7, 1919 in Cadiz, Ky., a daughter of the late Edward and Connie Thomas. Mother Ford was a loving housewife and mother; she was a charter member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She served on the church mothers board, missionary circle, Gardenia Club, culinary committee and was the clerk of the church for more than 35 years. Sister Ford loved her church and worked diligently in the Providence Association and the Ohio Baptist General Convention. She was a Girl Scout and Brownie leader; she was on the Campbell PTA board and was a member of the Ironton Band Boosters. Sister Ford served the Lawrence County Board of Elections at Kingsbury Elementary for years and was a member of the Democratic Women’s Club of the city. She was a board member of the Briggs Lawrence County Public Library; she served on the Lawrence County Homemaker’s Council, was a member of the South Side Homemakers Club and was a member of the Women’s Civic Club. She was a member of the Ohio Association of Colored Women’s Club in the southeastern district of Ohio including state, central, region and national. Sister Ford was a charter member of the Lawrence County Church Women United in this city. She was a businesswoman. She sold Sarah Coventry Jewelry and Tupperware for years.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her two baby daughters, Eva Marie and Mary Ford; her sisters, Rosie T. Thomas and Allie J. Bacon and her brothers, Marvin L. Thomas, Thaddus Thomas and John W. Thomas.
Sister Ford is survived by her husband, Samuel F, Ford, three daughters, Gloria Saunders of Ironton, Martha (Eugene Jr.) Quarles of Michigan and Jacqueline Ford of Columbus; a loving sister, Katie A. Thompson of Indianapolis, Ind. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Michele (Bruce) Daniels, Hawanya Quarles and Gary Jr. (Suzanne) Saunders; great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. David Peoples officiating. Interment will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Friends may call 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 409 Mulberry St., Ironton, Ohio 45638.
