SAN FRANCISCO — Reds third baseman Scott Rolen was evaluated in Cincinnati on Sunday for concussion-like symptoms and will remain inactive for several more days until his symptoms have improved.

Rolen was scratched from Saturday’s starting lineup against the San Francisco Giants and then sent home to be examined by concussion specialist Dr. John Brannan. He was hit in the head by a pitch from former teammate Jason Marquis in the seventh inning of last Sunday’s game against the Colorado Rockies.

‘‘The conclusion is as long as he’s still having symptoms, including intermittent headaches and an inability to focus, there will be no physical activity,’’ Reds head athletic trainer Mark Mann said after the club wrapped up its weekend series with a 5-2 win over San Francisco.

Rolen was scheduled to rejoin the team Monday in St. Louis, where he will be tested again. This time, the Reds plan to use a computerized test called ‘‘ImPACT.’’ The test was developed by the Sports Concussion Program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and puts the brain to work and derives data about points of trauma — measuring attention, memory, processing speed and reaction time.

After that, Rolen will have another appointment with Brannan back in Cincinnati on Thursday, Mann said.

The 34-year-old Rolen was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays just before the trade deadline for pitching prospects Josh Roenicke and Zach Stewart, and infielder Edwin Encarnacion.

Rolen, who is signed through 2010, was hitting .143 (2 for 14) with a home run and two RBIs in four games with the Reds after batting .320 with the Blue Jays.
