COAL GROVE — The most anticipated race in the six-year history of Rocky Top Raceway is coming on Friday with the “Les Boggs Open Wheel Shootout.”
The race will feature the first ever appearance of the 410 outlaw Sprint Cars paying $2,000 to win, Mod Lites-$1,000 to win, and Modifieds-$650 to win.
The 410 Sprint Car racing has long been considered one of the greatest spectacles in all of motor sports with unbelievable speeds and “on the edge of your seat” action.
These cars only weigh 1,200 pounds and have over 900 horsepower. Only Formula One cars have a greater horsepower to weight ratio. For the first time ever, this spectacle will be coming to the tri-state region.
Race fans in attendance will also get to see a new overall track record set. Up to now, the fastest lap ever clocked in time trials at RTR was a 13.471 second lap (100.215 mph) by Josh McGuire in 2006.
The 410 Sprints are expected to bring the track record down into the 11-second bracket with average speeds of 115 mph around the three-eighths mile track.
In addition to the exciting Sprint Car action, one of the largest races in the country for the Mod Lites is also on the card. For the second time this season, RTR will host a 30-lap, $1,000 to win Mod Lite show.
There were 33 Mod Lites from Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Illinois, and North Carolina in attendance for the last $1,000 to win show back in April. The Modifieds will also be racing for a regular $650 to win show.
General admission is $14 for adults, $2 for youths ages 7-12, and youths 6-and-under are free. Pit passes are $28.
Gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps starting at 7:30. For more information, visit the web at www.rockytopraceway.net.
