PORTSMOUTH — Putting up their best score of the season was as easy as one, two, three. Or in this case, one, one, one.

Ironton had three golfers shared medalist honors as the Fighting Tigers posted their best team score of the year in a quad match Wednesday at the Shawnee State Park Golf Course.

Andy Holtzapfel, Josh Cooke and Josh Zornes all fired a one-over par 36 to share top honors. Josh Mullins and Jonathan Williams had solid rounds of 40 and Mason Weisgarber shot a 43.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had that happen,” said Ironton coach Jeff Kerns. “I’ve had co-medalist, but I don’t ever remember having tri-medalist from one team.”

Ironton’s team score of 148 was 14 strokes better than host Portsmouth Clay who shot a 162. Portsmouth was next at 170 and Wheelersburg 171.

“I thought this would be our toughest road match so far and I told the players not to let down. We needed to make a statement since it’s the course we play our sectional,” said Kerns.

“I can’ be disappointed because we’ve shown hard work, improvement and focus. It’s easy to get distracted when school starts. I’m very pleased with where we are at this point.”

Ironton, now 53-2 on the season, plays at the Portsmouth Elks on Thursday.
