BCPL announces story times

ASHLAND, Ky. — A variety of weekly story times for children 7 and under take place at Boyd County Public Library beginning in September.

Age ranges given here are approximate – parents know what is right for their child.

Toddler Time (up to age 3) is a 20-30 minute program featuring songs, short stories and active play. It is held on Fridays, at 11:30 a.m. at Main, and at 1 p.m. at Summit.

Preschool Story Time (ages 3 to 5) is a 30-45 minute program featuring books, songs, games and a craft. It takes place on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. at Summit and on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. at Main.

Stories Before Bedtime (ages 3 to 7) is a 30-45 minute program featuring books, songs, crafts and activities. It is held on Thursdays at 6 p.m. at Main.

The Main Branch is located at 1740 Central Ave. Summit is at 1016 Summit Road, across from Boyd County Middle School.

Grant to help program at Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — A grant by the National Science Foundation will extend an initiative at Marshall University to increase the number of female faculty members in certain fields.

The Marshall program was established in 2006 through a Science Foundation grant. The $750,000 grant announced Wednesday will extend the program by two years.

The program aims at increasing the number of female faculty members in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Marshall biology professor Marcia Harrison says the latest funds will be use for recruitment, retention and policy efforts.

Outdoor movie rescheduled

ASHLAND, Ky. — The outdoor movie “Grease” that had been scheduled to be shown at Boyd County Public Library this evening has been rescheduled, because of recent rain, and a forecast for more.

The ground where people must sit to watch the movie is saturated, and is also dangerous for outdoor electrical equipment.

“Grease” will be shown next Friday, Sept. 4. In case of bad weather next week, the film will be shown in conjunction with the Sept. 25 feature, “Back to the Future.”

The outdoor movies are part of the Library’s Pictures in the Park series, which takes place the last Friday of each month, through October. The outdoor movies take place just adjacent to the Reading Garden at the Main Branch, 1740 Central Ave. Admission to all library movies is free. Some refreshments are provided, and additional snacks can be purchased for a small cost. Those who come need to bring their own blanket and/or chairs.
