LUCASVILLE — It was a step in the right direction.

After losing 52-13 last week, the Rock Hill Redmen pulled together with a better showing despite losing 14-0 to the Lucasville Valley Indians Friday.

“We stepped it up defensively. We played hard and we played physical,” said Redmen coach Todd Knipp. “There was a stretch at the end of the first half they got a couple big plays on us and scored.”

The game was scoreless until the second quarter when Lucasville got the game’s only two scores.

Valley quarterback Zach Utley ran 3 yards for the first score with just 4:49 left in the half. Evan Richard’s conversion made it 7-0.

Utley came back with a 15-yard scoring strike to Zach Bukiewicz two minutes later and the Indians were up 14-0. The touchdown was set up on a 40-yard punt return by Alex Holcomb.

“We couldn’t get anything going offensively. They had a lot of team speed and they were able to keep us bottled up,” said Knipp. “But I was pleased with the effort and the intensity. We just have to correct the mental mistakes and get better.”

Rock Hill managed 110 yards of total offense. Quarterback Will McCollister was 6-of-21 for 71 yards and Steve Lewis ran 13 times for 49 yards.

Utley was 8-of-15 for 128 yards passing and ran 22 times for 96 yards.
