OUS offering community education classes

Leaves are falling and it’s time for fall quarter classes in the Community Education department at Ohio University Southern.
Fall quarter classes begin Monday and will continue through Nov. 23.

For the first time, OUS will also be offering Community Education classes at its Proctorville Campus.

Upcoming classes include holiday floral arranging, women’s self-defense, etiquette training, digital photography and a holiday shopping trip.
Ballroom Dance (Introduction)
Do you have a cruise pending? How about a class reunion or wedding? Or do you just want to make a few new friends while getting some exercise? Grab a partner or come solo and let Gayle teach you a thing or two….step! Learn the basics of waltz, tango, swing, cha cha, foxtrot, and mambo/salsa.

Introduction to Oil Painting
This class is to help the would-be artist discover his or her own hidden talents, however, aspiring artists with previous experience are also welcome. The instructor begins by presenting the basic materials required for the oil painting medium.
Drawing skills are NOT required. Students are given individual attention and proceed at their own pace-there is no deadline or need to rush through a painting.

Dog Obedience
The key to dog obedience is the owner knowing how to train the dog. Simple commands such as sit, stay, down, and come can make a remarkable difference in your dog’s behavior.
OUS will offer three classes depending on the age of your four-legged friend.
Puppy Kindergarten – New puppy? This class is designed for owners and their puppy’s ages 3 mos. – 6 mos. (depending on breed).
This is a hands-on class to help new owners learn how to enjoy and control their new “family” member.
Owners will learn the basics for simple obedience, housebreaking, crating, playing, grooming, and socialization of their new pet. Bring your puppy, vet papers, and a good sense of humor.
Time: 6:30 – 7:30 pm

Sub-Novice – (age 6 mos.) In this class, owners will learn by doing hands-on work with their dog. You and your dog can learn the basics of proper canine conduct. Your dog will be on its way to becoming a well-behaved member of your family.
Time: 7:30 – 8:30 pm

Novice – Are you interested in taking your dog a little further than just basic commands?
This class is designed with that in mind. Prerequisite for this class is Sub-novice dog obedience or permission from the instructor.
You will go to the next level with your dog and fine-tune the basics learned in Sub-novice.

Beginning Guitar and Fiddle
This class is for anyone interested in playing acoustic guitar and/or fiddle.
With the guitar, participants will learn about strumming chords with alternating bass lines, picking techniques, hot licks between chord changes, and much more.
With the fiddle, students will learn basic violin techniques with the emphasis on scales and bowing patterns. This class is designed for students interested in learning either instrument (they do not have to learn both).

Aerobic Condition for Beginners
Looking for a low-impact, effective workout? Look no more! This class will help you burn calories and strengthen your cardiovascular system as well as add to your muscular endurance.
Come join the fun and melt away those extra pounds and inches. A mat or towel is suggested.

Introduction to Excel Basics
Designed for those with little or no experience in spreadsheets, this course will cover spreadsheet terminology, creating and printing worksheets, using multiple worksheets, entering and working with basic formulas and functions, formatting and enhancing worksheets using styles and auto format, and finding and replacing data.

Advanced Excel

Kickboxing
Cardio-kickboxing is a cardiovascular workout utilizing kicks, punches, calisthenics and rope jumping to elevate heart rate and strengthen all major muscles groups. Specific strengthening, toning and stretching exercises will also be includes.
