PROCTORVILE — The Fairland Dragons turned some nasty weather into a good friend.

Fairland used a strong defensive effort to blank the Trimble Tomcats 14-0 Friday in a non-league game.

The Dragons’ defense held Trimble running back Tyler Dyla to 34 yards on 14 carries. The Tomcats had 38 net yards rushing on 35 carries and just 72 total yards offense.

“Our defense played well. The weather caused a lot of bad snaps and they mishandled the ball and that allowed us to tackle them for losses and sacks. We were happy to get a shutout,” said Fairland coach Dave Carroll.

The bad weather also had an effect on Fairland’s high-powered offense. The Dragons finished with 145 total yards including just 30 passing yards as quarterback Chad Fisher was 6-of-15 and suffered three interceptions.

The Dragons’ running game had 115 yards on 31 attempts.

“We dropped balls, we lost our footing. It was one of those nights. It was a slop-fest. We dropped four balls that would have been touchdowns,” said Carroll.

“The weather just stopped everybody, them and us. The wet field and weather took its toll. The defense was definitely at an advantage.”

Fairland took an 8-0 lead with 8:59 left in the first half on a 17-yard pass from Fisher to Tanner Sowards. Fisher ran for the conversion.

The Dragons went on a 12-play drive at the end of the first half and scored with 1.3 seconds left as Fisher hit Kyle Taubenheim with a 3-yards pass. The conversion run failed.

Fairland (3-2) hosts Rock Hill next Friday to begin Ohio Valley Conference play.
