LLOYD, Ky. — One team ran the ball and the other threw the ball. But which team did what?

Coal Grove has always been known for its ground game. Greenup County has been using the spread offense until this year.

But it was the Hornets who used the air to make a difference Friday as they beat the Greenup County Musketeers 36-22 despite a school record 272 yards rushing by Rashard Carter.

Carter gave the Musketeers a 7-0 lead with a 71-yard jaunt with 4:29 left in the first quarter.

But Coal Grove (4-1) answered with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Evan Ferguson to Shawn Morrison two minutes later.

The Hornets came back to take a 12-7 lead on a 16-yard scoring strike to Jake Murphy. Ferguson finished 4-of-7 passing for 89 yards and two scores.

With a lead in hand, the Hornets went back to what they do best: Run the ball.

Oakie Haynes extended the lead to 20-7 on a 16-yard run. Ferguson threw to Aaron Dickess for the conversion.

Greenup drove to the Hornets 3-yard line, but Carter fumbled the ball and the Hornets recovered.

Eight plays later Boo Woods broke free on a 68-yard touchdown jaunt. Ferguson ran for the conversion and the lead was 28-7 with just under a minute left in the third quarter.

Carter made up for the fumble with a 55-yard scoring run that cut the lead in half, but Coal Grove was up to the challenge and drove for the clinching score as Haynes ran 4 yards to cap the drive.

Woods added the two-point conversion and it was 36-14 with 8:54 to play.

Carter got loose on a 62-yard touchdown run with 1:11 to play to complete the scoring.

While Greenup County had 350 yards on the ground courtesy of Carter, the Hornets racked up 308 yards to go with the 89 yards passing and a 397 total.

Woods had 139 yards on eight attempts while Haynes added 92 on 19 rushes. Fullback Frank Delawder got 42 yards on eight tries.
