Redwomen edge Chesy in volleyball

CHESAPEAKE — It was just what Chesapeake coach Dana Edwards expected, it just wasn’t the outcome he wanted.

In a five-set match, the Rock Hill Redwomen beat the Lady Panthers in an Ohio Valley Conference volleyball game Tuesday, 18-25, 25-20, 25-15, 14-25 and 15-10.

“It was a war. I told the girls we were in for a tough game. Rock Hill never quits. Coach (Jennifer) Besco does a great job,” said Edwards.

Sarah Rice had 7 points including 3 aces to lead Chesapeake in the first set. Rock Hill’s Nicole Stamper came back with 7 points — 4 aces — to even the match in the second set.

Britany Thompson came up big for Rock Hill in the third set with 12 points including 8 aces with 5 coming in a row.

Courtney Heffner’s 4 aces and Ashley Jenkins 2 kills and 4 aces enabled Chesapeake to tie the game at 2-2 in the fourth set.

But Rock Hill won the tiebreaker 15-10 to win the game.

In the reserve match, Chesapeake won 25-23 and 25-17. Beth McWhorter had 5 kills and 3 aces and Caitlin Heffner 3 aces to lead the Lady Panthers.

Chesapeake hosts Coal Grove at 5:30 p.m. Thursday on Senior Night.
