Self defense workshop for women to take place at Shawnee State University
PORTSMOUTH — The SSU Women’s Center, the Theta Phi Alpha Sorority and the Office of Counseling and Psychological Services will be sponsoring a Self- Defense for Women workshop for women that will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20 in the Sodexo West Ballroom at the University Center.
The workshop is for women to learn how to defend themselves from attackers.
National college statistics show that one in four college women surveyed are victims of rape or attempted rape; 85 percent of rapes on campus are acquaintance rapes; and one in six female college students reported having been a victim of rape or attempted rape during the preceding year.
The majority of reported victims and offenders are college age, with the rape victimization highest among 16-19 year olds.
Statistics also show that 13 percent of college women are stalked during an academic year and 3 percent of these students are sexually attacked.
The workshop is free and open to all women. For more information, call the Women’s Center at (740) 351-3738 or e-mail Dr. Roberta Milliken, director, at email@example.com.
