Area teams’ playoff fate remains uncertain

It’s crunch time as in crunching numbers.

While the Ironton Fighting Tigers have virtually wrapped up a post-season playoff berth, three other area teams remain in contention.

The Coal Grove Hornets, Fairland Dragons and Symmes Valley Vikings are all in a position to qualify but need to win out and get some help in order to qualify.

Obviously teams must win their final two games, but the difference will be on the second level points.

Ironton (6-2) is second this week in Region 15 of Division IV and have an outside shot of overtaking first-place Amanda Clearcreek by winning out.

Even if Ironton doesn’t finish first, wins over Nelsonville-York and Warren should be good enough for a second place finish and a first round home game.

Coal Grove and Fairland’s chance are intertwined. The two teams meet in week 10 and the winner may get the playoff berth while the loser is out.

Coal Grove (7-1) is seventh in Region 19 of Division V and will be in a battle with Wheelersburg, Lucasville Valley, Caldwell and Barnesville for the last two playoff spots.

The Hornets won’t get many points this week since they’re playing 1-7 River Valley.

Fairland — currently 11th in the computer — needs to win out and, if everything goes right, could finish seventh or eighth in Region 15 of Division IV.

Since No. 1 plays No. 8 and No. 2 plays No. 7, there is a chance Ironton and Fairland could meet in the first round.

Symmes Valley (6-2) has a more difficult road due to Bishop Rosecrans upset win over Grove City Christian last week.

The Vikings are ninth this week in Region 23 of Division VI. They will be in a nip-and-tuck finish with Bridgeport and Tuscarawas Central Catholic for the final playoff spot.

Tuscarawas Catholic has Garaway (3-5) and Conotton Valley (0-8) left while Bridgeport plays Shadyside (4-4) and Cameron, W.Va. (1-7). If the Vikings win out and either or both teams lose a game, the Vikings would qualify.
