PEDRO — Fans were expecting to see a strong running game when the South Point Pointers faced the Rock Hill Redmen Friday.

They got what they expected, but it didn’t come from where they expected it.

Rock Hill had its biggest rushing performance of the season with 303 yards on just 33 attempts as the Redmen beat the Pointers 34-6 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“I thought we could slow them down running the ball, but I wasn’t sure how well we would play defensively. We mixed and matched a lot of kids up front and they all stepped in and did their jobs,” said Rock Hill coach Todd Knipp.

“We had a good game plan. We did a good job containing the wide stuff. We didn’t let them turn up field.”

Quarterback Will McCollister ran nine times for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Steve Lewis got 79 yards on eight attempts while Coty Davis finished with 39 yards on eight tries for the first unit.

South Point (1-8, 1-3) was held to just 151 total yards and 123 on the ground. Doug Dillon — who ran for 311 yards last week — was held to 27 yards on 15 carries.

Rock Hill (2-7, 2-2) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as McCollister bolted 64 yards on the second play of the game for a touchdown. Cody Massie kicked the conversion and it was 7-0.

Josh Malone had 35-yard punt return to the 12-yard line that set up a 10-yard scoring run by McCollister and gave Rock Hill a 14-0 lead before the break.

Davis had a 2-yard scoring run in the third quarter that pushed the lead to 21-0.

South Point managed to cut the deficit to 21-6 on a 3-yard run by Larry Brandon to start the fourth quarter, but Lewis answered with an 8-yard touchdown run and the lead was 28-6.

Mitch Malone capped the scoring as he ran 2 yards for a touchdown to put Rock Hill ahead 34-6.

“This was a big win for us. We had a great week of practice. We said we wanted to win three out of our last four. That’s what you’re going to remember. After the Coal Grove game we took the next step and now they’ve got to finish.”

Next Friday Rock Hill hosts River Valley while South Point goes to Chesapeake.
