Healthy Panthers finish season strong

CHESAPEAKE — There’s an old saying that goes, “When you’ve got your health, you’ve got everything.”

And in the case of the Chesapeake Panthers, you have a few wins.

Racked by injuries and illness early in the season, the Panthers have gotten healthy and in turn have won three straight games to end the season including a 50-8 win over the South Point Pointers Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We’ve played pretty good the last three weeks. We got healthy, we got our guys back who have been hurt a little bit, and we stopped making the mistakes that have been hurting us,” said Panthers’ coach Phil Davis.

Gabe Freyre and Peter Hintz were again the one-two punch in the Panthers’ running game. Freyre ran 11 times for 170 yards and Hintz carried 10 times for 144. Both scored three touchdowns each.

Davis praised the two, but he also noted the play of fullback Trey West.

“Trey West is one of the best blocking fullbacks we’ve had in a long time,” said Davis.

Chesapeake took a 21-0 lead in the first quarter as Freyre ran 38 yards for a score, Hintz went 42 yards and then Freyre broke off a 50-yard gallop.

Hintz got loose on scoring runs of 64 and 15yards in the second quarter and it was 35-0 at the half.

Freyre had a 38-yard TD run with 8:11 in the third quarter and the reserves finished up.

Nate Jones got the Panthers other touchdown with 1:20 to play. South Point avoided the shutout on a 44-yard jaunt by Brandon Hedrick with 26 seconds left.

The Panthers end the season 4-6 and tie with Fairland and Rock Hill for second place at 3-2 in the OVC.

“The kids played with a lot of emotion. It was a nice end to the season. It was a good bunch of kids to be around,” said Davis.

The Pointers (1-9, 1-4) ran for 181 yards, but 60 came against the second team. Doug Dillon — who wasn’t expected to play — finished with 100 yards on 16 carries.

The two teams did not have any passing yards as they combined to go 0-of-10.
