PEDRO — Mary Louise Markel, 79, of Pedro, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, from King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.
The Lawrence County native was born May 24, 1930, the daughter of the late Millard and Myrtie Depriest Layne. She was also preceded in death on Dec.15, 2006, by her husband of 60 years, Howard “Gene” Markel, whom she married Sept. 11, 1946.
Mrs. Markel was a graduate of Decatur Washington School and a homemaker. She was a lifetime member of the Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church in Pedro where she served as secretary/treasurer for more than 50 years, was a Sunday School teacher, a youth leader for many years and a member of the Womens Club of the church. She loved to quilt, sew, and crochet and her hobbies included cooking and canning. She also touched the lives of many elderly, sick and shut ins with cards on holidays and birthdays.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by: a sister, Margaret Milem.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Walter Ray Depriest of Pedro; a daughter and son-in-law, Kristy and Randy Redmond of Pedro; six grandchildren, Adam (Carol) Depriest, Jared (Amy) Redmond, Garrett (Tiffany) Depriest, Miranda (Jason) Guy, Keri (Adam) Wade, and Brandon (Linzy) Depriest; 11 great grandchildren, Brittany Howard, Devin Guy, Drew Redmond, Dylan Redmond, Rylie Depriest, Kylie Guy, Coleton Redmond, Elijah Depriest, Olive Wade, Nolin Depriest, and Gunner Redmond and a brother and sister-in-law, Merle and Reba Layne of Prospect.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home with Emil Cartee, Brent Layne and Ronnie Blagg officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to the funeral Saturday at the funeral home. The grandchildren will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be Sam Matkins and Gary Bridges. To offer condolences to the family, please visit
