LUCASVILLE — This one belongs at a fishing derby. It’s the one that got away.

Zach Utley hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds to play that lifted the Lucasville Valley Indians over the South Point Pointers 58-56 Friday in the season opener.

Utley’s shot capped a fourth quarter comeback as the Indians rallied from a 47-36 deficit to outscore the Pointers 22-9 in the final quarter.

“I’m disappointed that we lost, but I’m pleased with our effort and the way we played at their place,” said Pointers’ new coach Chris Barnes.

“We missed four or five layups late in the game that rolled in and out. If we make those, they’re fouling us. Instead, we made some costly mistakes and they hit some free throws.”

The loss overshawdowed a 25-point performance by South Point’s Blake Barnes that included five 3-point goals. He also had 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

Cody Taylor added 13 points while Ethan Prater had 7 rebounds and 6 assists for South Point.

The game was tied 16-16 after the first quarter. The Pointers then took a 29-26 halftime lead and pulled away to a 47-36 lead at the end of the third quarter.

But Valley outscored the Pointers 22-9 in the fourth quarter and converted 9 of 10 free throws over the last two minutes.

“We gave an awesome effort. Valley is going to win some games. We had more field goals and more 3-pointers, but we had more turnovers. We turned the ball over too many times. We had a lot of inexperienced guys playing their first game,” said Barnes.
