SCIOTOVILLE — It took a little longer than Jeremy Williams wanted to get his first career coaching victory.

The St. Joseph Flyers beat the Sciotoville East Tartans 90-78 in double overtime as Williams got a win in his coaching debut.

“It was more stress than I really needed,” said Williams with a chuckle.

“Seriously, I was really proud of the way our guys battled back. We had some guys who had never played in a varsity game before and they stepped up. We had three players score career highs.”

Tanner Riley was one of the trio as he had a career-high 29 points. He also had 12 rebounds.

Joseph Unger had a career high 17 points to go with 12 rebounds and T.J. Young also had a career-best 13 points plus 7 rebounds. Spencer Schwab had seven rebounds. Payton Blair got 16 points, 6 assists and 2 steals.

Jon Garrett led East with 26 points.

The Flyers were 30 of 52 from the field, but they were guilty of 27 turnovers.

“We shot the ball well, but we lost a lot of possessions because of the turnovers,” said Williams.

East took a 20-18 first quarter lead, but Blair and Young scored 6 points each in the second quarter as St. Joseph took a 36-35 halftime lead.

The Tartans went back on top at 53-52 in the third quarter despite 6 points by Riley and 4 from Schwab.

St. Joseph was 8 of 13 from the foul line in the two overtimes including Riley who was a5 of 6 as he scored 9 points.

“We finally got the lead and they had to play from behind. We hit our free throws.”
