SOUTH POINT — Coach Chris Barnes was looking for some balance. He found it.

Tevin Mitchell, Ethan Prate and Greg Taylor all scored in double figures to help take the scoring pressure off Blake Barnes as the South Point Pointers rolled past the Portsmouth Trojans 85-62 Friday.

Barnes — who had 25 in the team’s first game last week — scored 18 points against the Trojans. But Mitchell had a career-high 23 points while Prater got 14 points and Taylor 10.

Mitchell did not miss a shot from the field as he went 7-of-7 including 3-of-3 from behind the arc. Barnes also handed out 11 assists while Prater grabbed 10 rebounds as they each posted a double-double.

“We needed that. When teams give us other options, we need to capitalize on them and we did that tonight,” said Chris Barnes who got his first win as the Pointers’ head coach.

South Point (1-1) decided the game in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 24-6 lead. Mitchell and Blake Barnes combined for half the total.

Blake Barnes scored 5 more points in the second quarter as the Pointers extended their lead to 42-21.

Portsmouth outscored South Point 20-18 in the third quarter.

“The first half we played really, really well. The second half we lost our intensity. When you get a 20-point lead, you tend to let down,” said coach Barnes.

The Pointers picked up their scoring in the fourth quarter as Mitchell had 11 more points.

Isaiah Reeves and Tre Underwood had 12 points each and Forrest Johnson 11 to lead Portsmouth (0-2) who was 7-of-15 from 3-point range as a team.

The Pointers lost 79-64 at Bath County, Ky., Saturday.
