Things didn’t go well all day, but they went the right way enough of the time.

Battling through some rough times, the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers had plenty of good times to hand the North Adams Lady Dragons their first loss of the season Saturday, 57-47.

Ironton (6-1) led the entire game and pushed the lead to as many as 17. However, North Adams also cut into the lead and got within 7 in the third quarter and with a minute to play.

“We played pretty well for 28 minutes of the game, but the rest of the time we didn’t take care of the ball. We threw the ball away too many times,” said Ironton coach Doug Graham.

Lorna Ceaser led Ironton with 22 points. Brea Tackett had 14 points and 4 assists while Nikki Elswick scored 12.

The Lady Tigers dominated the boards 40-28 with Elswick grabbing 14, Ceaser 8 and Alex Taylor 6. Ironton also converted 18 of 21 from the foul line.

On the down side, the Lady Tigers had 24 turnovers.

“Their press bothered us a few times, but a lot of times we just threw it away with no one on us. We shot free throws well, but there were times when we took some bad shots,” said Graham.

Ironton jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first quarter and went up 24-13 at the half.

A layup by Elswick off a pass from Taylor to start the second half put the lead at 13, but three points by Karli Beasley and a foul shot by Emily Fite cut the North Adams’ deficit to 33-26 with 3:39 left in the third quarter.

A 3-point play by Ceaser and a trey at the buzzer by Tackett opened up a 41-30 Ironton lead after three quarters.

Two layups by Tackett extended Ironton’s lead to 53-36 with 3:17 to play. But then it was time for Ironton to get careless with the ball and thus began three quick turnovers.

Beasley had a steal and layup with 1:34 that made it 53-45. Elswick hit the first of two foul shots and it was 54-45. A put-back by Beasley with one minute to play made it 54-47, but Rebekkah Potter sank two free throws and Elswick added the clincher with 34 seconds to play.

North Adams (6-1) was led by Fite with 13 points and Bealey had 12. The Lady Dragons were just 14 of 58 from the field for 24 percent.
