It took two of one team to help negate of one of the other team.

Matt Hodge and Jerah’me Williams scored 21 points each to lead the Campbell Memorial Red Devils to a 71-63 win over the Chesapeake Panthers Tuesday in The Ironton Basketball Classic.

The duo’s scoring helped offset a 32-point performance by Chesapeake’s Nathan Copley that included six 3-pointers.

Lester Hughes added 16 points for Campbell Memorial (3-2).

Chesapeake (3-3) also got 13 points from Colin Kennedy while Trent Saunders added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Copley had 10 rebounds.

The Panthers didn’t seem to have problems scoring, but they could’ve had more. They were only 22 of 69 from the field for 32 percent.

“We didn’t put the ball in the basket and we didn’t stop them from putting the ball in the basket,” said Panthers’ coach Ryan Davis.

“But we just weren’t aggressive enough and we had some costly turnovers when we just got careless with the ball.”

The game had 10 lead changes in the first half, the final coming on a 3-pointer by John Sikora with 1:20 on the clock that put the Red Devils up for good at 31-29. A layup by Dwaylon Letlo made it 33-29 at the break.

Campbell opened up a 39-29 lead to start the second half and it was 46-39 at the end of the third quarter when Lester Hughes banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

A put-back by Williams and then a steal and layup by Williams extended the Campbell lead to 50-39 to begin the fourth quarter.

Chesapeake closed to within 52-50 when Copley followed up a missed shot with 5:20 left.

But a steal and layup by Matt Hodge put the Red Devils up 57-52. Peter Hintz hit a foul shot for the Panthers and it was 57-53 only to have Hughes hit a baseline jumper and Hodge made a layup after a steal by Letlo and suddenly it was 61-53.

Two fouls shots each by Williams and Hughes opened up a 65-53 lead with 1:33 to play.

Copley drained a couple of trifectas to get the Panthers within 66-61 with 56 seconds left, but Hodge went 4 of 4 from the foul line and Williams added another free throw to make it 71-61 with 22 ticks to go and virtually seal the win.
