Two new members have joined the Ironton City Board of Education. Dr. Burton Payne and Jay Zornes were sworn in during the regular board meeting Monday night.

Payne and Zornes were elected in November.

Payne, a former Lawrence County Commissioner and coroner, said he is looking forward to being a part of the good things that are happening in the school district.

“Just with the new school and all these nice things happening, I want to be a part of all that’s happening for our students,” he said.

Zornes, the co-owner of Creative Financial Solutions LLC, is the father of a first-grader, Lilly, who attends Ironton City Schools.

“I think more than anything I feel (the school district) is moving in the right direction and I want to continue that,” Zornes said. “I’m hoping to continue the upward march of our academic and extra-curricular programs.”

The board also elected officers and appointed board members to serve on committees for the year.

Robert Pleasant was voted board president. Vice president will be John Wolfe.

Tim Johnson and Pleasant will serve on the vocational committee. Wolfe will serve on the legal committee, Zornes will serve on the academic committee and Payne will serve on the legislative committee.
