PROCTORVILLE — John Buchanan enjoyed his first win, but he thinks he’ll enjoy more wins even better.

The Fairland Lady Dragons got their first win of the season Monday as they beat the Rock Hill Redwomen 61-35 in an Ohio Valley Conference game. It was also the first career victory for Buchanan.

“I knew it would come eventually. The girls are working too hard. We’re young team and we’re just getting started. We’ve got many wins ahead of us. I’m just glad to be a part of it,” said Buchanan.

The Lady Dragons (1-8, 1-2) struggled offensively in the first half as they shot only 22 percent and led just 23-15 at the half.

But Kayla Swiger scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half and Fairland made 9 of 17 field goal attempts in the third quarter as they pulled away to a 44-21 lead.

“We got any shot we wanted in the first half, we just couldn’t drop it in a bucket sitting next to us. The second half we didn’t do anything differently except we made shots,” said Buchanan.

“Our defensive intensity was there. The girls really got after it. The defense led to steals and we turned them into baskets. We did a good job turning defense into offense.

Besides Swiger, Megan Brooks had 9 points while Jamie Phillips and Kennon Clarkson added 8 points to a balanced offense.

Rock Hill (0-8, 0-3) was led by Chelsea Harper with 13 points and Brittany Thompson with 8.
