PORTSMOUTH — What a difference a day makes.

One day after scoring 103 points and shooting better than 50 percent from the field, the Symmes Valley Vikings went on the road Saturday and shot 27 percent in a 58-56 overtime loss to the Portsmouth Clay Panthers.

“Defensively we played well. Our defense is keeping us in games. Offensively we did well, we just couldn’t hit the shots,” said Vikings’ coach Jerome Fuller. “We battled hard and we had our chances to win.”

It was another tough loss for the Vikings who are five points from being 7-1 on the season. Instead, they are 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the Southern Ohio Conference.

Kris Tibbs had a big all-around game for the Vikings with 27 points, 15 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

Luke Taylor added 15 points and 15 rebounds. Hunter Johnson had 9 rebounds.

Symmes Valley was 22 of 82 from the field — just 5 of 24 from behind the arc — and they were a dismal 7 of 25 from the foul line.

Clay’s Jon Valentine had 15 points while Cody Delotell had 14 and Nathan Burchett 12.

The Panthers led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter despite 8 points by Taylor.

Clay went up 23-18 at the half and the Vikings fell behind 42-31 after three quarters.

Tibbs went to work and scored 10 points in the fourth quarter including a pair of 3-pointers to rally the Vikings as they outscored Clay 18-6 to tie the game 49-49 and force overtime.

Tibbs had another 3-pointer in overtime but Clay outscored the Vikings 9-7 to get the win.
