Making Things Happen

CHESAPEAKE — When you play well on both ends of the court, good things happen.

The Chesapeake Panthers played well on both ends of the court Saturday against the Huntington Ross Huntsmen, and something good happened: a 79-43 romp.

“We played well the first half. Not only did we guard well, but we scored well,” said Panthers’ coach Ryan Davis.

“We went a little dead in the third quarter and they scored a little bit in the second half, but it was one of those games you just want to work hard and try and get better.”

The Panthers were much better in the first half than their opponent. They built a 30-point halftime lead and coasted to the win.

Nathan Copley scored 22 points to pace three Panthers in double figures. Austin McMaster had 19 points and Colin Kennedy had 16 points. Trent Saunders pulled down10 rebounds and Colon Lindsey grabbed 7.

Dylan Gragg led Ross (5-6) with 21 points — 13 in the second half.

McMaster and Copley had 8 points each and Kennedy scored 7 as Chesapeake raced to a 27-12 first quarter lead.

Copley came back with 10 in the second quarter while the defense held the Huntsmen to just 3 points and the lead stretched to 45-15 at the break.

Ross made a dent in the deficit in the third quarter as the Panthers lead was cut to 58-32, but McMaster scored 6 points to begin the fourth quarter as Davis emptied his bench.

The Chesapeake-Ross match-up was the fourth and final game of the Panthers’ first annual “Beasts of the Southeast” boys’ basketball classic.

“We had some good crowds. I thought the tournament went well. I was pleased with how things went,” said Davis.

“We had a lot of people who turned out to help and I really appreciate that. A lot of people helped make this happen.”
