PEEBLES — One play separated the South Point Pointers from a stunning upset win.

Unfortunately, that play went the wrong way.

With a chance to tie or win the game, the Pointers committed a turnover and the Peebles Indians were able to escape with a 62-58 win Saturday and remained unbeaten.

“It came down to one play, but you can’t fault that. We battled back and got back in it,” said Pointers’ coach Chris Barnes. “I’m proud of our guys for not quitting.”

South Point (8-4) trailed 15-12 at the end of the first quarter and fell behind 31-21 at the half.

But Kyle Winkler scored 10 points in the third quarter as the Pointers outscored Peebles 28-15 to take 49-46 lead.

Peebles use the scoring of Andrew Seaman to tie the game.

Blake Justice missed a 3-pointer, but the Indians got the rebound and fed Justice driving to the basket for a layup and foul. He completed the 3-point play to put the Indians up 58-55.

After a South Point turnover, Peebles hit two foul shots. Blake Barnes converted a 3-point play to make it 60-58, but the Pointers had to foul and the Indians hit both shots to set the final score.

Blake Barnes had 20 points to lead the Pointers’ offense. Defensively, he held Justice to 16 points on 6-of-21 shooting including 1-of-8 from behind the arc.

Justice entered the game averaging 24.8 points a game.

Ethan Prater had 15 points and 8 rebounds and Winkler 13 points for the Pointers. Cody Taylor grabbed 8 rebounds.

Seaman led Peebles (11-0) with 29 points, 10 above his average.

“The difference in the game was Seaman. He played hard and he was a tough match up for us,” said coach Barnes.

“But we got better. It was a good experience. It was a packed gym and a tournament atmosphere. You hate to lose, but we didn’t quit.”
