Monnier, Hornets hold off Dragons

COAL GROVE — As Jerry Reed once sang, “When you’re hot, you’re hot.”

Devin Monnier was hot. In fact, he was sizzling in the first half as he helped lead the Coal Grove Hornets past the Fairland Dragons 59-52 Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Monnier made 9-of-10 field goal attempts in the first half as he scored 19 points and staked the Hornets to an 18-point lead.

Monnier scored 13 points in the first quarter and Cody Damron added 5 more as Coal Grove raced to a 25-9 lead.

Monnier got 6 more points in the second quarter and Coal Grove was up 37-19 at the break.

Jonathan Holbrook had 6 points and Chad Fisher 5 in the third quarter as Fairland began to make a comeback. Wayne Sparks had 6 points for the Hornets who saw their lead trimmed to 49-34.

Fisher scored 9 more points in the fourth quarter as Fairland sliced a 20-point deficit to just 6 points, but the Hornets converted 6-of-9 from the foul line to secure the win.

Monnier had a game-high 24 points for Coal Grove (10-4, 2-3). Sparks finished with 15 points and Darmon added 10.

Oakie Haynes grabbed 12 rebounds and Damron 10 to lead the Hornets’ dominance on the glass.

Holbrook scored 15 points and Fisher 14 to pace Fairland (6-6, 2-3).
