Poca holds off late Lady Hornets’ surge, 61-47

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Just when the Coal Grove Lady Hornets began to accelerate, they ran out of gas.

The Lady Hornets were making a run to start the fourth quarter only to have the offense dry up as they fell 61-47 to the Poca Lady Dots in the semifinals of the Huntington St. Joe Invitational small school division Wednesday.

“We got within three points and then we just couldn’t score. It’s hard to explain. I think we might have gotten a little tired on the big floor and not having as deep a bench as they did,” said Coal Grove coach Nick Miller.

Ashley Adkins hit a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter as Coal Grove closed to within 45-42. But the Lady Hornets scored just 5 more points the rest of the quarter.

Adrian Cunningham scored 8 points for Poca in the fourth quarter as they outscored Coal Grove 16-8.

Madie McGrew and Cunningham scored 8 points each in the first quarter to give Poca an 18-10 lead. It was 33-24 at the break.

Coal Grove got within 45-39 at the end of the third quarter.

Chelsea Delong had 21 points to lead Coal Grove (6-7). Adkins finished with 16.

Cunningham had a game-high 26 points for Poca (5-6). McGrew had 12 points and Erika Maloney scored 11.

The Lady Hornets will play Wayne, W.Va., at 7 p.m. Friday in the consolation game.
