CHESAPEAKE — The game was a lot like the week for the Chesapeake Panthers.

The first part of last week, the Panthers felt sick and couldn’t do much. Once they felt better, they played better.

Friday the Panthers didn’t play well the first half, but turned up their play in the second half and pulled away from the Coal Grove Hornets 58-43 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“It was a tough week. We had one starter sick on Tuesday and three were out sick on Wednesday,” said Panthers’ coach Ryan Davis.

“And Coal Grove is better than the last time we played them. I was just hoping to get out of there with a win.”

The Panthers had three players in double figures. Nathan Copley and Austin McMaster scored 17 points each while Trent Saunders added 10.

Chesapeake dominated the boards 35-24. Saunders had 12 rebounds with seven coming on the offensive end, Copley grabbed 10 — all defensive — and Kennedy seven.

Peter Hintz had seven assists and Kennedy three blocked shots.

Coal Grove (10-5, 3-4) was led by Devin Monnier with 10 points. Evan Ferguson and Cody Damron added 8 points each.

Turnovers were a key statistic. Chesapeake had 10 and only three in the second half. Coal Grove did not have a turnover in the first quarter but finished with 15.

Chesapeake led 16-14 after the first quarter and just 25-21 at the half. The Panthers managed to make it 37-32 at the end of the third quarter, but they outscored Coal Grove 21-11 in the fourth quarter to get the win.
