The second annual county-wide cleanup day in Lawrence County will be May 1.
The Lawrence County Commission agreed Thursday on the official date for the event began last year to cleanup roadsides, public areas and litter piles throughout the county.
The cleanup day is organized by the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District. Commissioner Doug Malone praised the solid waste district, saying the agency “has been very successful and its done nothing but help the county.”
He noted people are now being fined and forced to cleanup waste dumps and littering messes these days, whereas before, such infractions often went unnoticed.
The cleanup day has already gotten a shot in the arm from one local corporation. Dow Chemical has donated $1,000 for this year’s event.
The inaugural event last year drew more than 1,000 people who collected 955 bags of trash.
The county commission also named April 15 as the annual Wheelin’Sportsmen Fishing Day.
Each year for the last several, the local chapter of the Wild Turkey Federation, the Ohio Division of Wildlife and the Wayne National Forest have jointly sponsored a day specially set aside to give handicapped people an opportunity to enjoy the recreational opportunities at Lake Vesuvius.
“We get 400 to 500 people, usually,” South Hills Longbears Chapter, Wild Turkey Federation President Buddy Frye said. “It gives an opportunity to people in local nursing homes, several schools send people.
The public is invited to come and disabled people anywhere in the region at no charge.”
The event starts at 10 a.m. at Lake Vesuvius.
Fry was elected to the national wild turkey federation board last month — only the second Ohioan to achieve such an honor.
