SOUTH POINT — Talk about your shutdown defense.

The South Point Lady Pointers turned in their strongest defensive performance of the season and Kayla Fletcher reach a milestone in a 52-32 win over the Minford Lady Falcons Monday.

The Lady Pointers held Minford to just 12 points over the first three quarters of the game as they improved to 16-2 on the season.

“We pressured them pretty good. We held them to 12 points through three quarters, so that’s pretty good defense,” said South Point coach Dave Adams.

“We weren’t as sharp as I’d like to be, but we played hard.”

Fletcher got her 1,000th career point in the third quarter when she missed a free throw, Minford got a rebound but she stole it back and made a layup.

“That’s probably the way it should have been. That’s the way she plays all the time, so it only seemed fitting she score off a steal,” said Adams.

Jalynn Bradburn — who scored her 1,000th point last week — led South Point with 20 points. Fletcher finished with 14 and Tinesha Taylor had 12.

Courtney Briggs had 10 points for Minford — all in the fourth quarter against South Point’s second unit.

Fletcher scored 5 points in the first quarter as South Point led 13-7.

The Lady Pointers shifted into high gear in the second quarter by outscoring Minford 21-2 and led 34-9 at the half. Bradburn scored 8 points and Fletcher 7 in the quarter.

The defense limited Minford (11-8) to only 3 points in the third quarter as the lead grew to 46-12.

“When they only scored two in the second and three in the third, that was pretty good. Defensively, we did pretty much what we tried to do,” said Adams.

The Lady Pointers host Chesapeake Wednesday and River Valley on Thursday in Ohio Valley Conference games.
