COAL GROVE — Oh, those third quarters.

The third quarter proved again to be a thorn in Coal Grove’s side as the Lady Hornets lost to the Fairland Lady Dragons 47-44 in overtime Thursday.

Coal Grove had a 7-point halftime lead but was outscored 8-4 in the third quarter as Fairland began its comeback win.

“It was a slow pace and neither team was shooting the ball that well,” said Coal Grove coach Nick Miller. “But then we came out in the third quarter ran couldn’t score. The third quarter has hurt us a lot this year.”

Kelli McMackin and Chelsea Delong scored 5 points each in the first quarter to give Coal Grove a 12-7 lead.

Delong had 5 more points in the second quarter as the lead grew to 22-15 at the half.

But Fairland outscored Coal Grove 8-4 in the third quarter to draw within 26-23.

In the fourth quarter, Katie Fuller put the Lady Dragons up with a triple only to have Delong hit a 3-pointer to tie the game. Fuller then made two foul shots to put Fairland back, but the Lady Hornets’ Darrien Hankins was fouled with three seconds left and hit both free throws to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Fuller made another 3-pointer in overtime and Megan Brooks was 3-of-4 from the line to give Fairland the win.

Clarkson had 13 points to lead Fairland (6-12, 5-5).

Delong had a game-high 21 points and McMackin 11 to pace the Lady Hornets (7-12, 3-6).

Coal Grove hosts Rock Hill at 5 p.m. Tuesday prior to the boys’ game against South Point.
