Jesse and Bobbie Layne were married last July.

So when Jesse decided to combine his work experience in a carryout business with Bobbie’s experience working for five and one-half years at the Shake Shoppe, it was another marriage made in heaven.

Well, at least Wall Street.

Recently when Bragg’s Restaurant was put up for sale, the couple decided to make it a business venture they would enjoy. They made the purchase and opened Layne’s Kitchen and Carryout at 2441 S. Third St. in January.

“I wanted to be in business for myself and in the food service. I like being my own boss,” said Jesse Layne.

The couple plans to continue with the large food portions and most of the menu prior to his purchase of the business including the famous “A Burger” platter.

However, they are making some changes.

“We’re selling lottery, beer and anything like that they’ve done before, but we have a better beer selection,” said Jesse. “All the food is the same. We’ll try to make it the same way.”

Layne also plans to extend business hours. Breakfast will be served from 6 to 11 a.m. and lunch from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The store hours will not end until 8 p.m. during the week and the business will be open on weekends as well.

The store will be open until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

A drive-thru window in the rear is available to customers as well and the couple wants to offer even more services.

“We want to try and expand the actual building and have more seating space and coolers, but we might not be able to do that right away,” Jesse said. “We want to upgrade our gasoline and we’re taking credit cards which they didn’t do before.”
