ALBANY — It took a game that was already over to beat the South Point Lady Pointers.

Kristy Swinehart made two foul shots with no time on the clock as the Sheridan Lady Generals got past South Point 62-60 Saturday in the Division II sectional finals.

Sheridan’s Sam Robinson scored with 30 seconds left to tie the game at 60. South Point’s Kayla Fletcher took a shot with 10 seconds to go that rimmed out and Sheridan grabbed the rebound.

Swinehart was fouled with no time left and made the shots to put Sheridan in the district semifinals against Greenfield McClain.

“It’s a sad way to end the season we’ve worked so hard for. We had a great season and beat some really good teams,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Dave Adams.

“Sheridan is a good team. We did all we could do, they just made the last basket.”

South Point (17-3) jumped out to a 16-2 lead at the start of the game and led 20-10 at the close of the stanza.

With Fletcher on the bench in foul trouble in the second quarter, the Generals cut the deficit to 31-26 at the half.

“With Kayla out it changed the whole complexion of the game,” said Adams.

The Lady Pointers were able to go up 41-35 at the end of the third quarter and set the stage for the exciting finish as Swinehart took a pass and was fouled at the buzzer on a questionable call.

It was Sheridan’s only lead of the game.

Swinehart and Robinson combined for 23 of Sheridan’s points in the fourth quarter.

Not only were Swinehart’s free throws the difference in the outcome, but foul shots played a big role in the game. South Point made 9-of-12 from the line while Sheridan converted 21-of-30 free throws.

Sheridan was 10-of-13 from the line in the fourth quarter.

Fletcher led South Point with 20 points. Jalynn Bradburn scored 17 and Ashley Goodall added 10.

Robinson had 25 points and Swinehart 22 for Sheridan (17-5).

South Point won its sectional semifinal game over Vinton County 78-47. Sheridan reached the finals with a 60-56 win over Gallipolis.

The Lady Pointers host Chesapeake Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
