Pointers dominate West in sectional

JACKSON — No one would have blamed the South Point Pointers for looking past the Portsmouth West Senators.

Instead, they looked them in the eye and came right at them.

Despite a possible third game against Chesapeake lying ahead in the tournament road, the Pointers rolled past the two-win Senators 66-29 Tuesday in the Division III sectional semifinals.

“A lot of teams might lay down and just try to get by when they play a team that has only two wins, but our guys came to play,” said South Point coach Chris Barnes.

“We dominated the glass and made shots. We did what we had to do.”

South Point grabbed 49 rebounds to just 26 for West. The Senators made only 8-of-57 field goal attempts for 14 percent.

The Pointers (12-7) will now play Chesapeake at 8 p.m. Saturday in the sectional finals. Chesapeake has won the two regular season meetings.

“We just wanted another chance and to see what happens. We’ve had two games that were four-point games at the end,” said Barnes.

The Pointers went ahead 13-8 in the first quarter as Ethan Prater and Cody Taylor scored six points each.

Six different Pointers scored in the second quarter and the defense held West to only six points and it was 30-14 at the break.

“They were trying to take away (leading scorer) Blake (Barnes) and that left a lot of other options open. Our guys did a good job getting the ball to the open man and getting the ball inside,” said coach Barnes.

An 8-3 run to begin the third quarter put the Pointers’ lead at 38-17. Cody Groves scored for West to make it 38-19, but Taylor made a put-back shot and Greg Taylor finished the quarter with two layups and it was 44-19.

A 3-point play by the Pointers’ Jordan Bruton started the fourth quarter. Tyler Austin hit a 3-pointer and Ratliff scored, but Prater’s basket followed by two straight layups by Blake Barnes opened up a 53-24 lead.

Garrett Arthur scored for West but the Pointers went on a 10-2 run and the reserves finished.

Blake Barnes scored 15 points, Prater 14 and Taylor 12 to lead a balanced offense. Bruton added nine points and three assists. Taylor handed out four assists and Prater three.

Ratliff scored 11 for West (2-18).
