Ironton tennis wins opener

NEW BOSTON — In a battle of Tigers, one just had more fight.
The Ironton Fighting Tigers’ tennis team opened the season with a 4-1 win over the New Boston Tigers Tuesday.
Ironton won all three singles matches led by No. 1 player Andrew Hicks who beat Steven Russell 6-4, 6-3. Aaron Pettiford downed Alex Williams 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-2, and Brennan Banks topped Trey Branham in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles play, Devin Karnes and Ryan Sias topped Travis Grant and Brenden Herrforth 6-0, 6-3.
Ironton’s only setback came in the No. 1 doubles play as Jordan Sheridan and Schylar Fields lost a tough match to Brentley Bledso and Justin Moore, 4-6, 3-6.
Kylie Thomas played an exhibition match for Ironton.
Ironton hosts Gallipolis at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
