There will be three genealogy workshops in the Hamner Room at the Ironton location of Briggs Lawrence County Public Library this week. There will be a Basic Genealogy workshop at 11 a.m. Monday and repeating at 2 p.m. Saturday. There will be a Researching the Census workshop at 2 p.m. Thursday. Everyone interested in learning to crochet as well as those already experienced at the craft is invited to the Crochet Club at the Chesapeake Branch Library at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Beginners should bring a “G” or “H” hook and yarn. Experienced crafters may bring a current project. For information call (740) 867-3390.

Briggs Library retiree, Sheila Brumfield, is continuing her popular Crochet and Knitting Club at the Eastern Branch Library in Proctorville. April’s programs are scheduled this Thursday at 6 p.m. and Thursday, April 22 at 6 p.m. Ms. Brumfield will provide basic instruction and help with projects for beginning through intermediate level crafters. Participants need to bring “G” or “H” crochet hooks, knitting needles and yarn. Please register by the Wednesday prior to each session at the branch or by calling (740) 886-6697.

Everyone’s invited to participate in a Briggs Library book discussion group. The Ironton evening group will talk about “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” by John Berendt at 6 p.m. Thursday. For information contact your local branch.

The U.S. Census Bureau has set up questionnaire assistance centers at all Briggs Library locations. Census employees will be at each location through April 19 to assist individuals with completing the 2010 census questionnaire, answer general questions about the census and to provide language assistance. Questionnaire packets in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and Russian are also available at each location.

The 2010 Census Questionnaire Assistance Center schedule:

— Ironton library: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday

— South Point library: Noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Saturday

— Chesapeake library: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday

— Proctorville library: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday

— Symmes Valley library: 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday

Briggs Library is also partnering with the AARP to provide free tax preparation assistance at two library branches. Volunteers for AARP Tax-Aide will be at the Chesapeake Branch Library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday and at the Southern Branch Library in South Point from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday. Assistance is provided on a first come-first served basis.

The Briggs Library children’s department offers programs for homeschooling families at two locations. On Tuesday at the Main Library in Ironton, the kindergarten through third grade class meets at 2 p.m. and the fourth through eighth grade class is at 3 p.m. The classes repeat at the same time on Wednesday at the Southern Branch Library in South Point.
