ASHLAND, Ky. — Hopefully Coal Grove Hornets’ coach Dean Mader doesn’t suffer from motion sickness.

The Hornets up-and-down play was evident against as they took a lead early only to lose it as they fell 11-5 to the Fairview Eagles Tuesday.

“We’re a yo-yo,” said Mader. “We’re up and down. We can win or lose against anybody. That’s what you get with a young team. They’re just not consistent.”

Coal Grove (1-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Justin Hern doubled, Jake Murphy walked and Frank Delawder had a two-run single. Cody Damron followed with an RBI hit.

Coal Gorve added a run in the second as Drew Jenkins walked, Mark Davidson singled, both moved up on a ground out and scored when Murphy hit into a fielder’s choice.

The lead went to 5-0 in the top of the third when Justin Eldridge doubled and came around to score on a stolen base and passed ball.

But then the Hornets began their downswing.

Fairview got three runs in the bottom of the third inning and a run in the fifth to trail 5-4.

The Eagles erupted for seven runs in the sixth on just two hits, four walks and an error.

Hern was 2-3 as the Hornets got eight hits — five coming in the first three innings.

“We didn’t put the ball in play enough,” said Mader.

Brett Ritchie was 2-2 and Aaron Lowe 2-4 with three RBI to pace Fairview (2-5).

Coal Grove plays at Rock Hill Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
