PORTSMOUTH — The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings didn’t bring their hitting cleats.

The Lady Vikings managed just four hits and the Portsmouth Clay Lady Panthers rallied behind Holly Hempill to get a 3-2 Southern Ohio Conference win Monday.

“We didn’t step up and hit the ball,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Jeff “Odie” Estep. “In big games, you have to make the big plays or get the big hits. We left our bats at home.”

Symmes Valley took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Chelsea Wall singled, stole second, moved up on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch.

Clay tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Hempill reached on an error, went to second on a wild pitch, took third on an error and scored on another wild pitch.

The Lady Vikings took a 2-1 lead in the third when Erica Corn walked, stole second base and scored on a hit by Nikki Nance.

Corn held Clay in check until Hempill got her winning home run over the fence in centerfield.
