Errors costly in Flyers’ loss

SOUTH WEBSTER — It was giveaway night, but neither the St. Joseph Flyers or South Webster Jeeps wanted to participate in the unscheduled promotion.

The two teams combined for seven errors that led to all the runs being unearned as the Jeeps edged the Flyers 4-1 Thursday.

“Neither team hit the ball, we just made more errors. There were too many extra outs we gave them. We need to learned to put the ball in play and make the other team field the ball,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.

St. Joseph’s Tanner Riley and South Webster’s Wes Loop each pitched two-hitters.

Riley allowed just two hits in taking the loss. Riley struck out five, walked two and hit three. He has now allowed an earned run in 22 innings this season.

“Tanner pitched well enough to win. He was a little wild in the early innings, but we didn’t make the plays behind him,” said Bryant.

The Flyers got their only run in the top of the first when Payton Blair walked, stole second base and came home when a pickoff throw went into centerfield.

The Jeeps (8-7) took the lead with two runs in the second.

Loop walked, stole second, and Zach Wright put down a sacrifice. A wild pitch sent Loop to third and he scored on an error. Patterson reached on an error as the second run scored.

South Webster got a run in the third on a one-out hit by Brent Smith, a wild pitch, a walk to Loop, John Morrisette sacrifice, a hit batsman and an error.

The final run scored in the fifth when Smith was safe on an error, stole second and — after back-to-back strikeouts — scored on Wright’s hit.

St. Joseph (8-1) plays at Coal Grove Friday.
