McDERMOTT — When you play good teams, you’d better play good, too.

The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers played real good.

Okay, so the correct wording is Ironton played real well, but either way they outplayed the opposition Saturday as they won the Northwest Tournament.

Ironton got a run in the fifth inning and pitcher Karlie Collins made it stand up as the Lady Fighting Tigers beat Adena 1-0 in the championship game.

Ironton actually took a 3-0 lead in the top of the seventh inning, but the game was called due to rain and reverted back to the previous inning.

Collins struck out only three and walked two, but she limited Adena (17-3) to just two hits.

In the first bracket game earlier in the day, Ironton beat Portsmouth West 4-2 and followed it by beating Portsmouth Notre Dame 9-3 in the second game to win their bracket.

Ironton had just one hit against West, but three walks keyed a 3-run fifth inning. Rebekkah Potter hit into a fielder’s choice to score a run and tie the game at 2, and Emily Lilly followed with a base hit to drive in the two winning runs.

Collins allowed just four hits, struck out nine and walked five to get the win.

Nikki Elswick crashed a 3-run home run in a 6-run fourth inning while Karlee McMackin had a triple and Janie Morris a double to highlight an 8-hit attack. Potter went 2-4.
