PEDRO — Maybe David Bowie had the South Point Lady Pointers in mind when he sang “Under Pressure.”
Rachel Murnahan handled the pitching pressure and Brianna Whaley the hitting pressure as the South Point Lady Pointers nipped the Rock Hill Redwomen 1-0 Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“I really feel our team thrives on pressure. They handle it with such ease,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Tara Layne.
Murnahan gave up five hits, struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter while pitching out of three different innings when Rock Hill had runners in scoring position.
South Point (9-7, 5-3) scored the game’s only run in the fifth inning.
Ashley Smith led off with a single and Murnahan put down a sacrifice bunt. After Smith went to third on a passed ball, Whaley belted a triple.
“Brianna is our only freshman starter. I’m so proud of her for stepping up and getting the game-winning hit,” said Layne.
Morgan Schug pitched well in defeat for Rock Hill (11-8, 4-4). She gave up only five hits, struck out two and walked two.
